Tap to share contact without an app: vCard, NFC, and Add to Contacts
What happens when someone saves you from an NFC profile on iPhone vs Android, and how to reduce confusion at the tap.
The goal is their address book, not your app download
The worst digital card products ask strangers to install something before seeing your name. That kills conversion in hallways.
The better flow: tap or open link, profile loads, they hit save contact, you appear in their phone. No account required on their side.
HALVE is built around that flow. Recipient uses Safari or Chrome only.
vCard basics
vCard (.vcf) is a standard contact file format. Name, phone, email, URL fields.
Profiles can generate a vCard download or use browser APIs to suggest adding contact.
You do not need to put a full vCard on the NFC chip. URL to profile, profile offers save action. Cleaner and updatable.
iPhone behavior
After tap, Safari opens your HALVE profile. Save contact button triggers iOS contact UI with fields pre-filled.
They confirm once. You land in Contacts with whatever fields you provided.
Tips for iPhone users you meet: hold card on upper back edge near camera area for a second. If a notification appears, tap it.
iOS versions differ slightly in how aggressively they auto-open links vs show a banner. Test on a friend's phone before an event.
Apple Wallet passes are a different path (digital wallet cards). HALVE focuses on web profile + optional physical NFC PVC card.
Android behavior
Chrome opens profile. Save contact may download a .vcf or use intent to Contacts app depending on browser and manufacturer.
Samsung, Pixel, others vary slightly. Test on two Android devices if your network skews Android.
NFC tap location often center back. Some users never used NFC before. One sentence of coaching fixes most issues.
Common confusion points
"It opened a website, not Contacts." They stopped early. Show them the save button on the page.
"Download file?" Some Android flows use .vcf download. That is normal. Open file, import contact.
"Which app?" They chose wrong app from share sheet. Keep profile UI obvious with one primary save action.
"Nothing happened." NFC off, wrong tap spot, or damaged tag. Switch to QR on same profile.
Fields to include (and avoid)
Include: name as you want to appear in their phone, mobile if you answer it, professional email, one website.
Avoid: fax numbers as jokes, multiple duplicate phones, email you never check.
International format helps (+33, +44, etc.) if you cross borders often.

NFC plus save contact together
Tap opens profile fast. Save contact completes the job.
Without save, they may bookmark a link and never call. With save, you survive contact purge better.
Analytics on HALVE show profile opens. You still will not know if they tapped save every time. Follow up within 24 hours on good conversations anyway.
